Gilford Park Yacht Club
The Gilford Park Yacht Club (GPYC) was established in 1930 and incorporated August 9, 1933 but our genesis and story began many years before that date.
John Gilford purchased the land later known as Gilford Park in the early 1700's. The land was later deeded to the Barnegat Woodland Corporation; which until it disbanded in 1998 was considered the oldest corporation in America, originating in 1682. This predated the founding of the State of New Jersey! Barnegat Woodland Corp. owned all or part of the land from Dingman's Ferry in Pennsylvania to Long Beach Island, New Jersey including up to Ellis Island.
As part of a development effort the Barnegat Woodland Corp. recognized the GPYC as a community inducement and July 21, l936 deeded the site to the Yacht Club. In the by-laws; the objectives of the Club are:
-to encourage the sport of boating,
-to promote the science of seamanship and navigation and
-to provide and maintain a suitable clubhouse available for the recreation and use of its
members.
The GPYC has maintained true to our founders original goals and developed new philanthropic efforts. The Club operates a Boat Ramp which is FREE to all State, County and Local entities including NJDEP, Ocean CTY Sheriff Office, TR Fire/ Rescue, TR Police as well as any other charitable organization or group including Monmouth University, Barnegat Bay RE CLAM Program, and SURVEY. The boat ramp is also utilized by hundreds of boaters per season.
The GPYC also provides at no charge:
-a beach for residents
-canoe and kayak launching
To our knowledge we are the only free beach left in Ocean County.
Additionally, the GPYC provides scholarships to graduates of the three public high schools in Toms River and one to a graduate of Donavan Catholic. We donate to the In-vest a Cop Program, conduct boating licensure classes, provide a site for USCG Voluntary Vessel Inspections, sponsor young sailors, donate to local fire and rescue departments and are developing a sailing program for local children.
The GPYC is in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to entertain children stricken with cancer on a "make a wish" trip from Australia. The children spend a day boating, crabbing, eating iconic American foods hot dogs, hamburgers corn and interacting with members. Our partnerships also extend to efforts with Special needs children in local schools.
The members are proud of our continued dedication to our Club's original values.
