commodore's message

11/1/2020

On October 13th the GPYC Board of Trustees met with the purpose to discuss the re-opening of the club.  The Board decided to table the discussion until November 4th so we could have numbers for the membership on the costs to re-open at 25% of the posted occupancy.  We will be looking at bar and kitchen costs to include salaries.  The deck ice machine has been winterized and the boats at this time should be out of the water.  The bubbler system will soon be installed for the winter season.  I will send out a follow up to this message after the meeting to keep everyone informed.  As always, if you have any questions or want to talk about any issues, please contact me or a board member for the most up to date information.

On behalf of myself and the entire board of trustees, we look forward to seeing you all soon.

Ron Heinzman, GPYC Commodore

Commodore/Board of Trustee’s Message
November 2020

The GPYC Board of Trustees met on November 4th to discuss the tabled discussion concerning the costs to open and operate the club at 25% occupancy.  The Board seriously took into consideration the positives and negatives of a partial re-opening.  The Board determined that it would cost about $7874.00 just to open the door with no guarantee that we would even break even.  The Board had previously voted to discuss the reopening at 50% occupancy and decided last night that based on recent spikes in the COVID-19 pandemic and the initial overhead and operating costs, it would not be in the club’s best interest until the law permits 50%.

Most us were members in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy when we lost the building.  It was a difficult time and almost all of us supported the club even after the Board at that time made a difficult decision to raise dues so we could rebuild.  The club under the leadership of then Commodore Tom Noonan opened our beautiful building and we moved forward.  Now with COVID-19, the building is here, and we can’t use it.  We understand and went through it with you.  I have said before that our club is an investment for the good times and the unfortunate bad times.  I do say with confidence that the club will reopen again better than ever.  Bar Chair Tom McGovern, Kitchen Chair Lenny Gomez, and their respective committees are ready to move forward when the law permits.

When we were elected this year, you put your trust in us and the board is not always making the popular decision for some, but the best decisions for everyone to ensure that our savings are kept secure and we remain fiscally responsible.  It’s a very difficult time to be on any board during the pandemic.  As the Commodore, I do not get a vote.  I only vote to break a tie.  The Board was not only unified, but unanimous in their decision to wait a bit longer.  So, I didn’t get a vote, but I fully support our board and their decision.

We are going to begin having trustee meetings monthly again and we will keep you all informed.  Anything that would normally be brought to the membership, will be sent to each member via E-mail for your review.  The are no expenditures being voted on and no payrolls going out.  You will all be getting a letter in the mail so we can reach out to everyone to keep you informed.  Below is some information to help you set up your membership porthole on the GPYC website if you haven’t yet done so.  On a final note to our GPYC  Veterans,  Trustee Ernie Chapman who heads our Veteran’s Committee wished to reach out to any Veteran needing assistance during these difficult times.  He can be reached at (908) 910-3889.

Please hang in there and remain loyal to your club.   As Trustee Linda Clarici says, “GPYC Strong!”

Respectfully,

Ron Heinzman, Commodore, and the Entire GPYC Board of Trustees
